Synopsis: If anyone was in doubt about a charter of rights being back on the agenda for Australia, the 2020 Summit held earlier this month provided some much needed clarification. While the call for a charter of rights was one of the headline outcomes from the Summit, the delegates discussing the matter were by no means unanimous in support of the idea, and the supporters themselves were further divided between those who want a bill of rights entrenched as an amendment to the Commonwealth Constitution, and those who think a charter of rights as an ordinary act of Parliament more achievable in the short term. .. Synopsis: The Brisbane Institute members and guests were treated to an engaging and interesting glimpse into the world of art galleries through the wonderful seminar presentation given by Mr Tony Ellwood, Director of GoMA and the Queensland Art Gallery. Tony's insights into the behind-the-scenes world of the galleries provided some understanding of the difficulties faced in staging world class exhibitions from the emotional, financial, practical, and logistical standpoints. His accompanying slide show was filled with wonderful images of the gallery and its visitors, which together with his talk, kep the audience enthralled.

Synopsis: Hon. Andrew McNamara, Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, delivered an engaging talk entitled, Highway of Diamonds. Minister McNamara addressed some of the most significant issues to be facing Queenslanders in the future. His obvious passion for the state was demonstrated in his approach to dealing with renewaable energy, protecting the environment and maintaining and creating our national parks, and the problem facing us all: climate change. Synopsis: Francois Klaus provided the audience with an engaging account of his childhood background and the influences that led him in to a career in dance. With the aid of Rachel Walsh, a principal dancer with Queensland Ballet as his model, he described the various elements that make up the art of dance. Francois was a thoroughly engaging speaker and as one audience member stated, his melodious voice was a joy to listen to.

Synopsis: The fifth forum in a six-part series entitled Our Future, Your Say focused on Generation Y – at work, play and life. A panel of high-profile Generation Ys discussed a braod range of issues affecting Gen Y. Topics ranged across areas that included how they tthought the city could work better, the high cost of housing, environmental issues and whether our current leaders were thinking positively and imaginatively enough to meet future challenges and the needs of the younger generation Speakers included Australian Idol finalist Bobby Flynn, businessman Labour Solutions' Andrew Northcott, Queensland Prisoner's Legal Service director Matilda Alexander and Brisbane Triple J reporter, Vivian Hogg. Other Gen Y participants included Kim Nelson from Young Planners Queensland, Rave editor and writer Alasdair Duncan, Bridgeman Downs Baptist Church youth pastor Tim Sweetman and Courier-Mail feature writer Trent Dalton.
